Middlebrook, The American Eagle’s Nest by Carl E. Prince, 1958
As part of his Rutgers’ Masters program, Prince studied and wrote his thesis about Middlebrook, the Somerset County encampment where General George Washington and the Continental Army spent the winter of 1778-1779. Prince laments that in the study of the Revolution, Middlebrook is often overlooked, but as far as the size and effect upon the outcome of the war, it is significant. In his thesis, he discusses the selection and location of Middlebrook, the problems with supply, the strained relations of the 10,000 soldiers with the 10,000 inhabitants of Somerset County, and life at Middlebrook.
