Hillsborough Secures $1M Grant to Transform Former Police Station into Modern Community Recreation Center

Vacant Merdinger Park structure to be converted into a meeting and recreational space
HILLSBOROUGH, NJ – Hillsborough Township is proud to announce the award of a $1 million grant from the FY2026 fund, designated for the total renovation of the former police station at Merdinger Park. The project will breathe new life into the vacant structure, converting it into a hub for community meetings, local events, and recreational programming.
The project represents the culmination of a dedicated effort beginning with the Township's initial application in 2023.
At the February 10th Township Committee meeting, Mayor Catherine Payne extended special thanks to Congresswoman Bonnie Watson-Coleman, who was instrumental in initiating the proposal, as well as Congressman Tom Kean, for his vote of support in securing the final funding.
“This is a significant win for our community,” said Mayor Catherine Payne. “This grant allows us to take an underutilized asset and transform it into a space that serves Hillsborough residents. We are grateful for the federal support that turned this vision into a reality.”
The renovation will include a complete overhaul of the building’s façade and interior layout, creating a versatile space suited for public meetings and other community events
"This center will be a cornerstone for Merdinger Park," said Committeeman and Recreation Liaison Robert Britting, Jr. "By renovating both the interior and exterior of the existing building, we are maximizing our resources to provide a top-tier space for our residents to gather.”
