Hazardous Tree Requirements

As hurricane season approaches, the Public Works Department is reminding residents of the importance of preparing their properties for severe weather, especially when it comes to hazardous trees. It is every homeowner’s responsibility to inspect their property for any trees that may pose a risk during high winds or storms.

Dead, leaning, or damaged trees can cause serious harm not only to your home but also to neighboring properties. Taking action now can prevent costly damage and ensure everyone's safety.   We’d also like to make residents aware of the importance of inspecting their properties and prompt communication with the township.

If a tree from township-owned property falls onto residential property and it was not previously reported or documented as hazardous, the homeowner will be responsible for cleanup and any damages that result. However, we want to be proactive. If you believe a tree on township property near your home may be a hazard, please report it. We are happy to assess and address any concerns brought to our attention before an incident occurs. Let’s work together to stay safe and storm-ready. Thank you for doing your part.

A couple of additional notes regarding trees:

  • Ordinance 2024-16 now requires a Township permit for any trees removed. Trees removed must be mitigated by planting new trees. This is an NJDEP mandate. There are exemptions for mitigation if trees are dead or considered a hazard to the home.
  • Any land clearing to build new homes, pools, additions, etc. will now require a tree mitigation plan. If a project received Planning Board or Board of Adjustment approval, the owner must follow the approved tree-clearing plan. The Engineering Department will require a clearing survey and an as-built clearing certification. The Township will also have the Township Tree Expert review the clearing to verify that only approved trees were cleared and that required replacement trees were planted.
