Impervious Coverage
Impervious coverage is any surface in the landscape that cannot effectively absorb or infiltrate rainfall, such as driveways, patios, and walkways. Water absorbs into the soil, and runoff is naturally filtered of impurities before it reaches creeks, streams, and rivers. As areas become more developed, the amount of impervious coverage increases, and natural filter systems are no longer in place to intercept the runoff, which has serious implications for water quality and flood control.
